Notice of Confirmation to Use the New Postal Code (January 1, 2016)
2015-12-16
We would like to inform you that the transition period for the use of the new postal code (5 digits) ended on 2015/12/31.
Customs will not accept 6-digit postal codes for shipments arriving from 2016/1/1 onward and will notify them as errors.
The changed postal code is the 5-digit postal code, and for all telephone documents declared on 2016/1/1, only the changed 5-digit
postal code may be used.
Actions when using the old 6-digit postal code
- Items subject to list clearance: List clearance not available (general import declaration required)
=> Even duty-free list-clearance shipments under $200 will be excluded from list clearance due to a postal code error, and if they are
converted to a general import declaration, an individual customs clearance code will be required, and customs duties/taxes may be charged if the item value is $150 or more.
- Items subject to general import declaration: Error notice issued upon import declaration
- If the postal code is corrected to 5 digits but the shipping label already attached shows 6 digits, postal misdelivery by the post office,
return/retrieval costs may occur.
